Are premier college jersey patch deals setting the stage for a $1B NFL uniform sponsorship market?

That’s just one of the questions presented in the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three more key ideas to consider while reading today’s edition:

Revenue in the Backrooms: Athletic departments can transform legacy communications staff and uncatalogued storage rooms into direct revenue drivers. By identifying and authenticating historic program artifacts, universities can turn dust-covered memorabilia into premium inventory for online auctions, exclusive store drops, and donor packages.

The Vulnerability of Low-Differentiation: Bud Light’s long-term decline underscores the risk of high brand awareness without distinct product differentiation. In low-switching-cost categories, consumer backlash combined with shifting health habits can permanently erode market share when substitutes are readily available.

Optimizing for AI-Driven Search: As consumer search shifts from traditional web queries to AI platforms for product research, brands are reallocating media spend toward generative search visibility. Leveraging specialized AI optimization tools allows marketers to boost conversion rates while lowering customer acquisition costs.

A PATCHWORK OF VALUE

Last week’s Ohio State and Notre Dame jersey patch deals simply affirmed the power of college sports, according to SBJ’s Terry Lefton, who observes many brands are just now beginning to take note of the opportunity. More.

JMI Sports President Paul Archey, whose company represents schools including Georgia, Kentucky, Pitt, UCLA and Penn: “Those Notre Dame and Ohio State sales produced a jolt. We’re certainly getting more response from brands because of those. There was enough misunderstanding of these programs that they needed to see a few of these deals drop before they could fully understand value.”

The Team’s EVP/Managing Director of Sales Rights Chris Foy says the OSU and UND transactions highlighted college sports’ clout. “What we’ve seen, so far, are deals across entire athletic departments. We are going to see deals soon where schools decide there’s more money selling football and basketball [patches] separately.”

➤ Lefton wonders if premier college football teams are currently commanding in excess of $17M annually for an ad patch, what would one on an NFL uniform fetch on the open market? Per Apel Inc. Principal Jim Schwebel, who sold NFL sponsorships from 1983 to 2003: “If you are talking about one patch for every [NFL] team and every game, I could see a billion dollars. But if that ever happens, my guess is that it would be team by team. In either case, the network rights holders would want a share of that money, so it would be enormously complex.” CAA Sports Co-Head Mike Levine adds: “What an NFL patch would get — that’s a great question. It would be more valuable than any. But any brand investing in a college patch is certainly done for access to every sport and the alums. And NFL teams are getting great multiples selling equity now, so sponsorship dollars may not be as big a concern.” (link)

Writing on the exploding value of the sports memorabilia market, former Marquette Assistant AD for Communications Mike Wittliff highlights a unique opportunity for athletic departments to transition veteran communications staff into direct revenue drivers. Wittliff notes that standard departmental storage rooms are often packed with decades of uncatalogued history, masking hidden gems that carry immense alternative asset value. As an example, a seemingly mundane ticket stub from an ordinary 1997 Kansas football game against TCU holds a massive collector premium simply because it marks the collegiate debut of Pro Football Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson. By empowering long-time SIDs to leverage their deep institutional knowledge, departments can successfully identify, authenticate, and contextualize these milestone pieces. Rather than letting physical artifacts gather dust, universities can utilize these walking encyclopedias of program history to curate premium inventory for online auctions, exclusive team store drops or donor appreciation packages. Lots more. (link)

Meanwhile, General Mills Senior Corporate Archivist Natasha Bruns unpacks the operational framework behind managing a 160-year-old brand portfolio within a 5,000-square-foot physical archive, preserving over 10,000 individual records dating back to the 1800s. The repository, established in 1981, serves as an active resource for marketers reviving legacy intellectual property, a strategy recently utilized to reboot the 1990s "FruitHeads" campaign for Gushers. A three-person team manages historical inquiries regarding foundational brands like Wheaties, Betty Crocker, Cheerios, Lucky Charms, and Pillsbury to ensure modern campaigns align with established product history. The department also focuses on capturing current marketing activations to inform future generations of corporate storytellers, an increasingly difficult task as digital advertising formats multiply. Bruns: "That is definitely one of the biggest challenges of a corporate archivist. There’s so much being generated all the time. ‘What do you decide to keep?’ And we try to keep a collection of a little bit of everything, which can be pretty complicated. But we’re trying to get to, ‘What was the overall themes for a brand at a particular time? And how are we capturing that overall as authentically to what’s happening now?’" (link)

CONTAINING CROWDS, CONTROLLING CALENDARS

The New York Yankees reported a YoY uptick in aggregate ticket sales and suite license revenue thru Q2, from $282.2M over 43 games in 2025 to $285.9M over 38 games in 2026. The club is holding steady at third in MLB in average attendance. (link)

Tennis Australia will cap grounds pass allocations for the 2027 Australian Open to alleviate overcrowding following a 2026 tournament that drew nearly 1.37M fans. The policy change arrives after unrestricted $59 AUD ($40) tickets overwhelmed the venue last year, highlighted by over 100,000 attendees visiting a complex containing roughly 50,000 fixed seats during the opening Thursday. While the remaining Grand Slam tournaments must now weigh the financial upside of maximizing daily attendance against the resulting strain on the fan experience, Tennis Australia Chief Commercial Officer Cedric Cornelis: "This decision reflects the growing popularity of the AO and will help ensure fans are able to make the most of everything on offer across the precinct." (link)

Marketing Brew’s Jennimai Nguyen details the relationship between the Kansas City Current, KC native Jason Sudekis and Apple TV, as well as what owning its own stadium means for the NWSL club. The distributor and club collaborated on a Ted Lasso Night event, replete with photo ops, giveaways, co-branded merch and show-themed programming, in advance of a World Cup quarterfinal match watch party at CPKC Stadium, where scenes from the upcoming season had previously been filmed. Current SVP of Commercial Missy Jenkins cites the ability to “control our calendar” as a huge plus for stadium ownership and hopes to expand upon offerings to fans: “Whether that’s friendlies, whether that’s USA Rugby, whether that’s lacrosse, college athletics, or one-day concerts, we feel very privileged that we can open our calendar and we can do fun and exciting and new events such as this one…[especially] as we continue to grow and get better and understand what works in our building and what doesn’t.” (link)

SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario dives into Athletes First’s burgeoning media division and the company’s approach to athlete-led podcasts and video series. While the agency exercises control over production and talking points, SVP of sales and media Dan Gyves points out that “the way we build this is that the athletes own their own IP. Ultimately we want them to have that ownership. We’d love to be an incubator for amazing shows that go out in the world and crush it.” To wit, the Philadelphia Eagles-focused “Exciting Mics” has topped 4 million long‑form views and listens and 100 million social views in its first 10 months, while other content featuring Nebraska Football HC Matt Rhule and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner have each surpassed 1 million long-form views and listens and 16 million social views in less than a year. With production currently a collaboration with companies such as Goat Farm Network and AllCity Network, Athletes First co-founder and CEO Brian Murphy says that “ultimately, we’d like to build up our own Athletes First media platform and just have it all sit on that one platform.” (link)

The W Profile: Diane Hendricks
Co-founder and Chair, ABC Supply

After her husband and business partner, Ken, passed away in 2007, she refused to step back from American Builders and Contractors Supply (ABC Supply). Instead, she assumed sole ownership and orchestrated an unprecedented era of expansion, aggressively acquiring rivals and pushing revenues well past the $20 billion mark, earning the number 1 spot on Forbes’ 2026 America’s Richest Self-Made Women.

SHIFTS & SUBSTITUTES

The Financial Times’ Gregory Meyer and Madeleine Speed go in-depth on the popularity decline of Bud Light and parent AB InBev’s subsequent pivot other brands in the portfolio. Despite attempts to court back conservative customers via activation at UFC events following the Dylan Mulvaney backlash, Bud Light has now fallen behind Michelob Ultra in both sales volume and media spending. Kantar BrandZ’s director Ellie Thorpe: “The boycott highlighted what can happen when a brand with broad awareness, but limited differentiation, comes under pressure. Beer is a category where switching costs are low and consumers can easily substitute one light lager for another.” Healthier habits and other options for recreational consumption have also fueled a near two-decade long sales slide from a peak of 41 million barrels to an estimated 12.7 million barrels this year. (link)

With Japan Airlines experiencing a 10% reduction in YoY daily visits this year through early July, AdAge’s Garett Sloane takes a look at how JAL is attempting to boost its share of model on AI platforms. Using Jellyfish’s Share of Model tool, JAL was able to boost efficiency on Performance Max, including a 56% increase in conversion rate, a 14% improvement in return on ad spend and a 21% drop in cost per acquisition, while cutting media spend by 12.5%. With ChatGPT and Reddit now in the crosshairs, JAL VP of Global Brand Marketing Minako Kent: “Before, search was a little bit more uniform. People just did the search, then saw the ads … and then they just converted. But now, search is much more a way of buying and doing research before they actually make up their minds. We have to be more present everywhere.” (link)

A recent survey of 502 U.S. consumers by Caimera reveals that 70% of shoppers remain neutral or conditionally open to AI-generated marketing imagery while only 10% deem it harmful, provided brands do not utilize the technology to alter product fit, color, or efficacy. Retail Brew’s Jeena Sharma explains the data indicates consumers readily accept artificial intelligence in highly verifiable categories like home and furniture (65%) and electronics (60%), but express deep skepticism regarding supplements (41%) and beauty products (35%). Additionally, the study highlights a critical demand for transparency, as 85% of respondents admit they cannot reliably distinguish AI photos from reality, prompting 75% to demand clear disclosures and 79% to favor brands that voluntarily identify synthetic assets. Sharma on how the data establishes clear boundaries for corporate integration: "The findings highlight that shoppers are clearly receptive to the incorporation of AI when it makes the shopping experience easier overall or simply enhances it. A recent report by Collier, for instance, found that about half of consumers actually used AI for product recommendations, while 75% said AI 'significantly influences' their shopping decisions."
