Is Wall Street’s shift away from private capital about to cycle right back into a windfall for alternative asset managers?

That’s just one of the financial outlooks presented in the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three more key topics to consider while reading today’s edition.

Expanding Premium Hospitality: Franchises and venues continue to aggressively raise prices on high-end hospitality packages to capture surging corporate demand.

Targeting Niche Fandoms: MLB teams have driven massive ticket sales by leaning heavily into pop-culture, with first-time buyers making up over half of all theme-game attendees.

Ditching Traditional Endorsement Contracts: Professional athletes are moving away from traditional, one-off brand deals in favor of equity stakes, creative control, and direct ownership.

Scroll down for MLB’s $40M credit expansion, Inter Miami’s $1.45B valuation surge, and the WNBA’s record-breaking attendance numbers.

PRIVATE EQUITY & PUBLIC PRESSURES

Financial Times reporter Antoine Gara reports that shares of major U.S. private capital groups dropped by more than 15% this year, underperforming traditional investment banks like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, and Citigroup. The legacy banking institutions saw their stock prices rise over 18% in the past 12 months, bolstered by a wave of initial public offerings—including Elon Musk's SpaceX—and a deregulatory push under Donald Trump. Private equity giants like Blackstone and Apollo, which previously dominated the financial sector to reach valuations exceeding $1T, lack significant exposure to the current artificial intelligence boom and face mounting redemptions in their credit funds. High interest rates tied to the conflict in Iran and ongoing tariff policies further complicate the private capital ecosystem, stranding a record $4T in unsold assets and preventing firms from realizing performance fees. Analysts from Barclays warned about the ongoing lack of market acceleration, though Citizens Bank analyst Devin Ryan predicted the momentum currently driving traditional banking will eventually cycle back to benefit alternative asset managers: "A lot of what is driving the activity in banks and investment banks, which is in the early innings, is going to catch up and create a catalyst for the alternative manager business models." Private equity-backed CFOs are facing increased collaboration with their sponsors due to a recent trend of extended hold times across portfolio companies, according to CFO Brew's Demi Lawrence. While finance chiefs often worry about balancing internal cost discipline against the growth demands of investors, Riveron CFO Tony Ciotti and Portage Point Managing Director Barclay Stanton emphasized that the two parties inherently share the same goal of creating sustainable enterprise value. To successfully bridge the communication gap with investors like Kohlberg, HIG Capital, and Blackstone, executives must quickly interpret the sponsor's investment thesis and translate those specific value-creation metrics to other C-suite leaders. Ciotti: "When the portfolio company and sponsors achieve alignment is when my job is really rewarding, because the leash comes off. You can run fast, you can make decisions with great conviction, you can create significantly more value than either side could independently, and again, this all comes back to trust." (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Nick Timiraos explains the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting, as Chairman Kevin Warsh navigates a divided committee debating whether to hold or raise interest rates amid conflicting economic indicators. Recent data supports a pause, as June energy prices declined, underlying consumer prices remained flat, and New York Fed President John Williams noted that inflation appears to have peaked following tariff and war-related shocks. Conversely, hawkish officials point to renewed oil price surges tied to the Middle East conflict and underlying inflation stuck near 2.5% for the past year to argue that the current 3.5% to 3.75% interest-rate setting is insufficiently restrictive to reach the 2% target. (link)

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate reached a year-to-date high of 6.58%, up from 6.55%, as rising oil prices tied to Middle East conflicts pushed the 10-year Treasury yield to an 18-month peak. The Wall Street Journal’s Nicholas MIller notes the rate increase arrives following a stagnant spring selling season, with the National Association of Realtors noting existing home sales declined 2.4% in June to a 4.09M annualized rate. First American chief economist Mark Fleming anticipates rates will near 7% in the coming weeks but expects pent-up demand will eventually override the financial friction: "Many homeowners have rate lock-in fatigue and are just deciding to move anyway. And I don’t know that whether it’s a 6.5% or a 7% mortgage, it really makes that much of a difference to those who have that... fatigue and want to move." (link)

BORROWING BIG & PRICING HIGH

MLB issued around $40M in new debt in May, according to SBJ’s Chris Smith, who reports the “funds will support team-level borrowing through MLB Club Trust Securitization, a league-controlled credit facility. Fitch assigned an A rating and stable outlook for the new term notes. Fitch also revealed that, in April, MLB increased its credit facility’s borrowing limit from $125M to $150M per club. The ratings agency indicated that 28 MLB teams have utilized the league’s credit facility. As in its prior favorable credit ratings for MLB, Fitch pointed to the strength of the league’s media rights agreements with ESPN, Fox, NBC, Netflix and TBS, which are pledged to support debt service payments. … Fitch suggested confidence in MLB’s ability to navigate a looming labor battle, though it noted that ‘the approaching CBA expiration introduces a degree of uncertainty that warrants monitoring,’ and that the effects of a prolonged lockout could ultimately lead to a credit downgrade.” (link)

Augusta National Golf Club is increasing the price of its Map & Flag off-site hospitality package to nearly $20K for the 2027 Masters, up from the $17K baseline established during the venue's first three years of operation. The weekly badges, which retail for $19K before taxes, provide tournament entry alongside access to a two-story hospitality venue featuring premium dining and a dedicated merchandise shop. ANGC partners with On Location to manage the facility while strictly enforcing the tournament's broader prohibition of cell phones and electronic devices within the perimeter. Although general admission ticket prices for 2027 remain unchanged, SBJ’s Josh Carpenter notes the targeted hospitality hike bolsters a premium commercial portfolio anchored by the on-course Berckmans Place and a customized Official Masters Hospitality program. Sportico’s Justin Birnbaum unpacks Inter Miami's continued commercial growth, as highlighted by a new long-term sponsorship agreement with Marriott Bonvoy that marks the 14th partnership signed by the MLS franchise since January 2026. Marriott Bonvoy assumes official category rights and becomes a founding partner of Miami Freedom Park, joining brands like Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Modelo in sponsoring the $1B mixed-use development surrounding the newly opened, 26,700-seat Nu Stadium. The commercial expansion follows the arrival of Lionel Messi, whose presence helped drive local revenues from $55M in 2022 to $215M in 2025, establishing a league-leading $1.45B enterprise valuation. Data from Sponsor United indicates Inter Miami maintains an average partnership value more than triple the league mean, positioning the organization to reach $250M in local revenue this year alongside a recent contract extension keeping Messi on the roster through the 2028 season. Put a patch on it…
The Houston Dynamo have sold the MLS’ first back-of-kit logo in a new partnership with Dude Wipes. While financial terms were not disclosed, Dynamo CRO Nico Zini said the deal is the team’s third largest behind its naming-rights agreement with Shell Energy and its front-of-kit deal with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Partner Spotlight: WMT

In this interview, San Diego State Deputy AD, Strategic Communications & Brand Advancement Ayo Taylor-Dixon and BYU Senior Associate AD of Creative Strategy Tyson Hutchins joins College.town's Kristen Eargle to discuss how college athletics is moving beyond simply collecting fan data to using it to create more personalized, meaningful fan experiences.

They explain how partnering with WMT's Fan Intelligence platform is allowing their departments to better understand fan interests, segment audiences, and deliver customized content across websites, apps, email, and mobile notifications. Rather than measuring fandom solely by ticket purchases, both leaders emphasize that today's fans engage in many different ways and deserve tailored experiences regardless of where they live or how often they attend games.

Looking ahead, they believe AI and connected data will help athletic departments strengthen fan relationships, uncover new revenue opportunities, and make smarter marketing decisions while meeting supporters "where they are" with content and experiences that matter most to them.

BIG CROWDS, LARGER STAKES

Major League Baseball franchises are increasingly holding pop-culture theme nights to capture new demographics, driving a 38% league-wide increase in entertainment-centric programming alongside a 13% bump in associated ticket package sales between 2024 and 2025, Marketing Brew’s Alyssa Meyers reports. Clubs successfully capitalized on literary and television fandoms to generate immediate attendance surges, highlighted by the Boston Red Sox selling over 12K tickets in two days for an August 31 Heated Rivalry game and the Seattle Mariners moving 8K tickets in 36 hours for a One Piece collaboration with Toei Animation. Data from the 2025 season reveals these targeted activations effectively penetrate unengaged markets, with first-time buyers accounting for 56% of theme-game attendees and women comprising 45% of that specific cohort. The Golden State Valkyries have drawn more fans than any other WNBA team as the league hits its All-Star break, with 270,960 spectators coming through the Chase Center’s turnstiles so far across 15 games. The Valkyries’ average of 18,064 per game is also the highest in the league. The Indiana Fever, who had the second-highest attendance with 260,255 fans, did so in 16 games for an average of 16,266 fans. More per SBJ: “Rounding out the top five teams attendance were the Liberty (193,909 fans across 12 games), Fire (183,748 fans across 13 games), Sparks (166,963 fans across 13 games) and Storm (157,559 fans across 14 games). The league as a whole drew a total of 1,867,297 fans across 149 games for an average of 12,532, a 13% increase from the figure at the All-Star break last season, per SBJ. Full league figures inside. Digiday reporter Sam Bradley explores how modern athletes are abandoning traditional, transactional endorsement contracts in favor of long-term partnerships that grant them creative control and corporate equity. While legacy brands like Adidas, Nike, and Puma historically dictated campaign strategies, Bradley notes athletes are now leveraging their own digital media platforms—such as Jalen Brunson's podcast or Erling Haaland's YouTube channel—to establish independent intellectual property. Legal and marketing experts note that younger stars are demanding a seat at the corporate table, mirroring the 3% equity stake Roger Federer famously secured with On Running. To support this commercial evolution, the NBPA recently launched the PLYRS UNTD platform to facilitate direct, collective agreements that bypass team channels. NBPA executive director David Kelly on the motivation behind empowering athletes to negotiate directly with corporate partners: "We envision a world in which we’re trying to get rid of certain gatekeepers and allow the players and brands to really have a deeper relationship. The main thing we’re pushing for is a deeper engagement with the player from the ground up." (link)
