"Everybody thought prices would go down... and everyone was wrong."

That’s just one of the challenges to conventional wisdom presented in the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three more key ideas to consider while reading today’s edition.

CMO Turnover: Corporate brands often default to scapegoating marketing departments for systemic issues like franchisee margins or operational execution rather than addressing core strategy.

Sports Wagering Vortex: Americans placed roughly $166B in sports bets in 2025, more than double the entire U.S. movie, music, book, and museum industries generated combined ($70B).

Ditching Traditional Ad Clutter: With consumers bombarded by 3,000 to 10,000 commercial messages daily, marketing leaders are pushing brands to ditch wasteful visibility in favor of high-impact experiential plays and creator partnerships.

CANARIES & COAL MINES

The Green Bay Packers reported an operating loss for the first time in a non-pandemic year since 1990, recording $754.1M in expenses against $753M in revenues for FY26. Team President/CEO Ed Policy attributed the 18.7% rise in expenses to a $130M increase in player costs, highlighted by acquiring Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys and signing him to a four-year, $188M contract featuring $136M guaranteed. More of what you need to know…

The organization still posted a 54.8% increase in overall net income to reach $132.5M, bolstered by $453.2M in national league distributions and $133.6M in nonoperating gains that included payouts from ESPN's acquisition of NFL Network

The franchise will expand non-football programming at Lambeau Field—including an upcoming matchup between Notre Dame and Wisconsin—and explore naming rights for its practice facility after recently christening the adjacent Emplify Health Field to combat the capital advantages of rival teams selling minority equity stakes, and Policy notes: "We all know the cost of competing in the NFL is going up, and other teams have access to capital sources that we just don't have. For example, a team can sell 5 to 10% of their equity without giving up any controlling interest in the team, and they could raise more money than we have in our capital reserve fund in just a matter of months." Americans in 2025 placed roughly $166B in bets on sporting events, which is more than the entire U.S. movie, music, book, and museum industries generated in revenue combined. Fortune’s Catherina Gioino reports the “North American box office totaled $8.87B in 2025, which is still 22% below pre-pandemic levels. Recorded music revenue hit a record $11.5B. Live music like concerts and festivals brought in $18.51B. Meanwhile, book publishers tracked by the Association of American Publishers reported $14.6B for the year. And the U.S. museum industry generated an estimated $16.4B. Add it up and the total comes to roughly $70B, which is less than half what Americans wagered on sports.” Georgetown adjunct lecturer Marty Conway: “It literally is just a vortex. It picks up momentum, and that momentum takes it to another level. They’ve taken something that was just who’s going to win, and now you’re actually able to get involved in certain other events of the game. That’s a form of engagement as opposed to what we knew previously.” (link)

Financial Times reporters Claire Jones, Myles McCormick, and Kate Duguid outlined the escalating pressure facing Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh ahead of the central bank's upcoming two-day meeting, as resurgent oil prices tied to the conflict in Iran threaten to erase recent progress against inflation. CME Group data indicates the probability of a quarter-point rate hike surged to 38% from just 13% a week prior, a dramatic shift following a period of optimism sparked by a subdued consumer price index reading. Analysts are split on the Federal Open Market Committee’s, with Bank of America Head of U.S. Rates Strategy Mark Cabana warning that "it is very questionable whether monetary policy is restrictive at the moment," while New Century Advisors Chief Economist Claudia Sahm sees no majority support for a hike. Former U.S. Treasury economic counsellor Joe Lavorgna: "If I’m Kevin Warsh, I’d go to the White House and say: ‘Mr President, we hiked rates, but actually lowered long-term borrowing costs for corporates and, more importantly, for households. And, at the short end, people will get paid more interest on their savings. It’s a win-win.’" (link)

REINVENTION CONVENTION

The San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) have signed AI sales software firm Apollo to a multiyear jersey sleeve sponsorship agreement, per SBJ’s Alex Silverman, who reports: “Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but most MLS jersey sleeve deals are valued in the $1M-2M range per year, excluding high-profile outliers. The Earthquakes deal is Apollo’s first with a professional sports organization and is intended to serve as a blueprint for working with many others. The company negotiated the deal directly with the Earthquakes.” (link)

Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Masino will step down next month and be succeeded by former Bloomin’ Brands CEO David Deno. As you’ll recall, Masino’s effort to rebrand the company last fall was met by sharp pushback. (link)

Related, the restaurant industry replaced its top marketing executives at an unusually active pace, with more than 20 brands swapping CMOs over the past two years and 11 executing changes this year alone. Taligence managing partner Michael Wright tells Ad Age’s Jon Springer that the sector consistently ranks among the highest for executive turnover, fueled by mounting economic pressures and the expansion of the role to include digital ordering, loyalty programs, and artificial intelligence integration. Kantar SVP Dave Marcotte contends the volatility stems from the exposed nature of the position rather than weak hiring, as brands frequently scapegoat marketing departments when systemic issues like pricing, franchisee margins, or operational execution cause sales to drop. Despite the external pressures, some leaders believe the rapid turnover highlights a fundamental skills gap within the modern marketing talent pool. Former Yum! Brands/Taco Bell CEO Greg Creed on why executives prioritizing short-term social media trends often lack the long-term strategic vision required to sustain national restaurant chains: "I don't think they're good at brand building. What I find is when a brand got into trouble, I really see a dearth of ability to actually fix the brand.” (link)

Burger King President Tom Curtis introduced a pair of customer service initiatives designed to build upon recent financial growth, according to Marketing Dive’s Chris Kelly, who notes the company launched the Your Way Champions management role alongside a Whopper Guarantee program that provides dissatisfied guests with a remade burger and a digital coupon for a free replacement through August 31. The brand debuted a 60-second advertisement created by BarkleyOKRP to promote the adjustments, building on a March campaign that helped drive a 5.8% increase in Q1 comparable sales to outpace parent company Restaurant Brands International's 3.2% growth and reverse a 1.1% decline from the same period in 2025. Burger King established the new programs after soliciting direct phone calls and text messages from consumers earlier this year, and Curtis notes: "When we asked guests where we could do better, they gave us a lot of honest feedback, and now it’s our responsibility to act on it. We’re not going to get everything right every single time, but we’re committed to listening intently and improving every day." (link)

Live Nation has partnered with Livewire to launch Music Festival Tycoon, a new Roblox game developed by Sawhorse Interactive that accumulated 3.8M visits during a soft launch over the past few months. In the game, players construct virtual festival infrastructure, including stages, food stalls, and merchandise tents, and book fictional acts like MashUpHeaval to attract digital attendees. Live Nation plans to utilize the platform to engage younger demographics and drive attendance to physical events, initiating the strategy with a Lollapalooza integration that allows users to place the festival's main stage, mascot, and official merchandise on their virtual grounds. The game also features K-Pop group Cortis, offering unlockable avatars and virtual performances to promote the band's upcoming U.S. debut at Lollapalooza. Live Nation ultimately hopes the virtual sandbox will convince existing real-world festival sponsors to extend their advertising budgets into the digital ecosystem. (link)

SIGNAL > STATIC

The 2026 World Cup bypassed early market concerns about high ticket costs by securing 70 sellouts and pushing 24 additional matches past 99% capacity during the 104-game tournament, and SBJ’s Ethan Joyce reports FIFA expects its 2023-26 revenue cycle to exceed $15B, bolstered by sustained secondary market demand that prevented an anticipated late-stage pricing crash. TicketData.com's Keith Pagello noted that get-in prices for the first two group-stage matches doubled in the weeks leading up to kickoff, punishing fans who waited for last-minute discounts. Subsequently, knockout stage tickets surged before returning to pre-tournament baselines, illustrated by the championship match between Spain and Argentina, which originated with a $7,322 get-in price in October 2025, peaked at $12,300 in late June, and settled at $7,477 hours before kickoff. Pagello on how the actual market dynamics completely inverted popular assumptions regarding the ticketing strategy: "The overall sentiment was that they will have to lower the prices to get tickets sold because there’s no way that they’ll sell them all at these prices. And so many people based [their opinions] on that reasoning, which was sound reasoning at the time. ... Everybody thought prices would go down. That’s what everybody was saying. ‘There’s so many unsold tickets.’ And everyone was wrong." (link)

A 2025 Deloitte Digital report revealing that 75% of American adults participate in fandoms is prompting companies like Netflix, Tubi, Adobe, and Reddit to leverage highly engaged audiences to inform marketing partnerships. Here are the key notes…

Marketing Brew’s Jennimai Nguyen points out that Netflix CMO Marian Lee and President of Advertising Amy Reinhard utilized the popularity of the film KPop Demon Hunters to launch a live concert series and a targeted McDonald's collaboration built entirely on fan requests.

Meanwhile, Tubi VP of Creator Partnerships Kudzi Chikumbu and CMO Nicole Parlapiano mirror this fan-first approach by amplifying niche viewers rather than dictating broad platform messaging, a strategy highlighted by the company sending customized gifts to vocal superfans.

Nguyen notes that brands also rely on platforms like Reddit to research specific consumer subsets and optimize targeted social content, and Reddit CMO Jim Squires explains: "Anything that is on these fandoms, I think of Reddit as the greatest focus group that’s ever existed. We help brands on what they’re trying to do with our automated tools, pull all the subreddits that are relevant, pull all the conversations, and get their creative in front of people at the right moment in the right conversation in the right community to be able to fuel that fandom and to ultimately drive business impact." (link)

Mastercard Senior Fellow and former Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Raja Rajamannar discussed his philosophy of brand restraint during an interview with Marketing Brew's Kelsey Sutton at Cannes Lions. Rajamannar defended his controversial decision to systematically cut the brand's traditional advertising budget by 70%, redirecting those funds into experiential marketing and influencer partnerships. The pivot, he explained, successfully propelled Mastercard to become the 12th most valuable brand globally. More key takeaways…

On the modern consumer tuning out commercial clutter: "Put yourself in the shoes of your consumer. On an average, you are bombarded by anywhere between 3K and 10K commercial messages every single day. It’s an overload of commercial messages that most people, and the human brain, cannot simply process, they just tune out. So the clutter is unbelievable."

Why traditional advertising is functionally dead: "It’s not that advertising doesn’t work, but to make advertising work, it’s getting more and more difficult, and it’s becoming even more difficult to establish that your advertising is working and attribute the results to this advertising campaign. And so, from that point of view, I keep saying in a provocative way that advertising is dead."

As for the necessity of brand restraint: "When the clutter is high already, you should figure out a way to stand out as opposed to add to that clutter… Don’t mistake visibility for impact. You need a certain level of visibility, but beyond that, it is off-putting, and it only adds to the clutter, whether it is visually or on your television or your digital, wherever. Don’t overdo it."
