"In modern pro sports, the franchise increasingly functions as the demand generator, while much of the durable value is captured by separate entities..."

That’s just one of the key ideas presented in the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three more topics to consider while reading today’s edition.

Tailoring the Live Event Experience: By cross-promoting sports and concert inventory while jumping on viral cultural trends, venue operators are finding smarter ways to integrate corporate brands and keep venues top-of-mind.

The Need for a Collectibles Strategy: As AI increasingly digitizes daily life, physical objects and tangible experiences become far more rare, exclusive, and valuable, leading Fortune 500 brands to soon require a dedicated collectibles marketing strategy.

Prediction Markets Enter MLB: The New York Mets have signed Novig as their exclusive prediction market partner, marking MLB’s first entry into the emerging sponsorship category. The deal signals a broader shift as professional teams race to monetize alternative gaming platforms.

Scroll down for Adidas’ World Cup marketing hit, Real Madrid’s record €1.2B revenue, and why Inter Miami split its automotive sponsorship category.

DEMAND GENERATORS

Puck’s Eriq Gardner analyzes Mark Cuban's lawsuit regarding the sale of the Dallas Mavericks, noting the dispute exposes a structural shift where sports franchises increasingly function as demand generators for separate real estate entities. Gardner’s perspective: “In modern professional sports, the franchise increasingly functions as the demand generator, while much of the durable value is captured by separate entities controlling the land, arena operations, parking, premium hospitality, and year-round development. …The team attracts the crowd; the real estate monetizes it long after the final out. …These are not merely stadium projects with some restaurants and apartments attached—they are massive development projects whose most important tenant happens to be a professional sports franchise." Louisiana Tech launched Varsity Blue, a new $99 annual membership program designed specifically to engage middle and high school students between the ages of 13 and 18. The initiative provides members with access to all regular-season home athletic events alongside exclusive apparel and an online merchandise portal. The launch completes a four-tier fan development pipeline that targets specific life stages, beginning with Champ's Kids Club (ages 4-12), transitioning into Varsity Blue (ages 13-18), moving to the Blue Bloods student organization, and culminating with alumni giving. Bulldogs AD Ryan Ivey: "One of the greatest strengths of college athletics is its ability to create memories that last a lifetime. Whether someone is attending their very first game with their family, experiencing Louisiana Tech as a student, or returning years later as an alumnus, we want every fan to know they are part of something bigger than a single season. Varsity Blue creates one more opportunity to belong, ensuring those connections continue to grow during some of the most formative years in a young person's life." (link)

Varsity Brands CFO Javier Idrovo anticipates an initial public offering will serve as the most likely exit strategy for the sports apparel organization following its 2024 acquisition by KKR for a reported $4.75B. The company generated $2.7B in revenue over a 12-month period ending September 30, according to Moody's Investors Service, making a fifth private equity buyout or a strategic acquisition improbable due to its scale. Idrovo, who previously managed finances for Blue Triton Brands and Hershey's, is currently prioritizing Sarbanes-Oxley compliance across the BSN Sports and Varsity Spirit business units to prepare for the public market. He conducts bi-weekly meetings with KKR to execute a predetermined investment thesis rather than relying on a traditional 100-day transition plan. Idrovo explains why the accelerated operational cadence of the private equity ecosystem appeals to his management style: "To me, this sense of urgency, alignment on really getting things done, because we have a limited timeframe, was really the driving force for me to continue in the private equity world. ... That’s part of the excitement, because then you go into the next opportunity." (link)

Churchill Downs Inc. reported a record $980M in Q2 net revenue for 2026, marking a 5% YoY increase fueled by record wagering and elevated ticketing during Kentucky Derby week. Bloodhorse’s Frank Angst notes the track experienced “record all-sources wagering on its races that week, a 12% increase in peak viewing of the Kentucky Derby race (24.4M), an 11% spike in average viewership of the race (19.6M), and record all-sources wagering on the Kentucky Oaks card in the first year that race was contested in primetime.” (link)

EMERGING CATEGORY LEADERSHIP

Baylor has rolled out three football uniform combinations that fans can vote on. The Bears will don the winner for the 254 Night home opener. (link)

The New York Mets have tapped Novig as the team’s exclusive prediction market partner, making the team the first MLB club to fill this new sponsorship category. SBJ’s Joe Lemire: “While Kalshi, Polymarket and Novig have all signed league deals, this is believed to be only the third sponsorship of a pro sports team, following a pair of NHL agreements: Polymarket with the Rangers and Kalshi with the Blackhawks.” Mets SVP of Corporate Partnerships Zach Feldman: “We want to be really fan-focused with our partnership strategy. We want to be always thinking about how do we improve the fan experience and how do our partners play into that? And then as well, we want to be innovative. ... We want to be leaders in every emerging category.” (link)

Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment EVP/Chief Entertainment Officer Laurie Jacoby discussed her strategy for elevating the live event experience at the Barclays Center during an interview with Ad Age reporter Adrianne Pasquarelli. Here’s what she had to say…

Avoiding cookie-cutter marketing activations for touring acts: "I don’t want it to be cookie cutter, where we’re just putting a show in and there isn’t some element of us hosting and having that Brooklyn experience, both for the artists and their team, but then as well as the audience coming in to experience that show."

Cross-promoting concert and sports inventory: "During games we promote our concert schedule and vice versa. I oversee and work with the NBA, the WNBA and our basketball ops team, but I also oversee dealing with their schedule. So I’m integrated in every part of it. It’s important for us to have that unity across all of our brands and our home teams at the venue."

As for capitalizing on viral cultural moments like the Taylor Swift wedding trend: "There was no way you could avoid it. And a few of us were just sitting around talking about it, and we’re like, as a tongue-in-cheek thing, we should just say, hey, we do weddings too. Because you’re acknowledging that it’s happening, but also just putting Brooklyn and Barclays Center in the picture as well." (link)

VaynerMedia CEO Gary Vaynerchuk believes that “collecting will become the next lifestyle genre” and notes his company has launched a collectibles marketing division “just like Coca-Cola started a sports marketing division when the Olympics were getting important as a driver to consumption. I believe in 10 years every Fortune 500 consumable product — apparel, CPG — will have a collectibles marketing strategy. I don’t know if you guys saw lines around the door at Popeye's for the One Piece collectible. People flooding to a Dodgers game to get the One Piece collectible. I think differentiation in an AEO/GEO, agentic commerce world around collectibles and community to get people to stop their normal pattern of what they're just reordering — because they want to buy a deodorant that has a collectible of their favorite [entertainment thing]." EXPERIENTIAL RETURNS

The USTA continues to elevate the premium hospitality experience at the U.S. Open, introducing new dining partnerships alongside the ongoing $800M renovation of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The tournament's food and beverage portfolio will feature new outposts from Chef Eyal Shani's Miznon and West Village sandwich shop Salt Hank's, joining returning high-profile culinary figures including Chef Enrique Olvera, Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli, Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, and Simon Kim of Cote Korean Steakhouse. The facility upgrades, scheduled for completion next year, will introduce two new luxury suite levels, expand the promenade-level concourse by 40%, and add 2,000 new courtside seats to bring the total to 5,000 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center COO Daniel Zausner on demands placed on participating restaurateurs: "Restaurateurs must have the labor and ability to handle the U.S. Open. It’s not for the faint of heart. ... We eat our way through New York City looking for what is new and exciting in the offseason. It isn’t great for my health but it is great for the event." (link)

Adidas reported a quarterly record of €6.7B ($7.7B) in revenue during the second quarter of 2026, fueled by its heavy sponsorship footprint across the World Cup that included the match ball, referees, and finalists Spain and Argentina. The market responded by sending company shares down 19% after marketing expenses tied to the FIFA event climbed $243M, pulling operating income down to €574M ($660M) against expectations of $770M. The brand still raised its annual revenue growth forecast to between 9% and 10% following a 13% quarter-over-quarter increase. Apparel revenue increased by 34% to €2.7B ($3.1B) and the performance business grew 39%, offsetting a flat €3.5B ($4.2B) footwear segment constrained by European discounting. (link)

Real Madrid reported a world-record €1.2B in revenue for the 2025-26 season, marking a 3% YoY increase bolstered by a €26.3M post-tax surplus and €287M in EBITDA. The financial growth relies heavily on the Bernabeu Stadium refurbishment, which generated €363M in stadium revenue and included €10M from personal seat licenses. The Athletic’s Chris Weatherspoon notes the 15x UEFA champions offset €1.1B in stadium renovation debt by driving marketing revenues to €539M, providing the necessary capital to finance a €618M sports staff payroll and deploy €161M to sign Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras, and Franco Mastantuono. Inter Miami and Hyundai finalized a multiyear sponsorship agreement designating the automaker as the “official mainstream automotive partner” of the franchise. The deal grants Hyundai entitlement rights to the newly named Hyundai Club premium space inside Nu Stadium and the Hyundai Garage within the 131-acre Miami Freedom Park mixed-use development. SBJ’s Alex Silverman notes the club strategically separated the sponsorship from its existing premium automotive partnership with Audi to maximize commercial revenue driven by the presence of Lionel Messi. Financial terms were not disclosed. (link)
